What the Ghibli effect actually does.
The instruction behind this effect has two branches, and which one runs depends on what is in your photo. If it detects a person or an animal, the subject waves their right hand toward the camera while the entire scene gradually transitions into Studio Ghibli style animation — and the instruction adds a specific constraint, that the subject's facial features and clothing details must stay clearly visible and the transformation must look natural rather than abrupt.
If the photo is a landscape with no subject in it, the wave is dropped and only the second half runs: the scene itself transitions into the Ghibli look with no character animation at all. That is why a photo of a valley produces a calm drift and a photo of a person produces a greeting.

One clear subject
A single person or animal, filling a reasonable part of the frame. The face carries the whole effect, so if it is small, the likeness goes.
Visible hands
The person branch of the instruction asks for a right-hand wave. If both hands are cropped out, the model invents one, and invented hands are where this effect looks worst.
Even light
Hard backlight and deep shadow both survive badly through the restyle — the pastel pass flattens exactly the contrast the photo was relying on.
Landscapes are fine too
A photo with no person in it takes the second branch and simply becomes a Ghibli scene. It is a genuinely different, quieter result.

Group photos are the most common failure. The instruction is written for one subject; with three people in frame the wave lands on whoever the model decides is the subject, and the other faces drift.
Text and logos do not survive. The restyle repaints the whole frame, so a printed t-shirt slogan or a shopfront sign comes back as plausible-looking nonsense. If the wording matters, this is the wrong effect.
Sunglasses and face masks break the likeness. The effect is redrawing the face, and it needs to see the eyes to redraw them as yours.
